South Australian views

An album of South Australian views of Flinders Ranges, Kangaroo Island, Port Pirie, Port Augusta and one of Darwin. Photographers are not all known - although some are attributed elsewhere to Walter Howchin, and, according to a researcher, numbers 1-24 are by H.R. Perry. Many are duplicated elsewhere in the collection but these for the most part are better quality images. Captions are as they appear in the album.

A collection of photographs with views of coastline on Kangaroo Island and at Rapid Bay, the lighthouse at Cape Jervis, shipwrecks on the Coorong and Wardang Island, Renmark, Kopperamanna Lutheran Mission, and other places in South Australia. Photographs 1-9 were taken by Rev. N. H. Louwyck, for the Centenary, 8 September 1936 of the landing of Col. William Light at Rapid Bay South Australia. Photographs 10 (see series 22 photo 29), 20, 48 are missing from the set.

Heinrich family album, compiled by Ilona Oppenheim from loose family photographs. Notes found on the verso of photographs are noted in the caption in inverted commas. Topics include life at Hermannsburg Mission in the Northern Territory in the nineteen twenties, with photographs of some Aboriginal people and visitors to Hermannsburg, including scientists, government officials and tourists. Photos 293-295 are restricted from view pending assessment of Aboriginal content. These images include 293. Ceremonial tjuringa stones of the Hermannsburg area (restricted); 294. 'Manangananga' sacred cave (restricted); 295. 'Holy cave 17 April 1929 (Dad's birthday)'. Large group of Aboriginal people from the Hermannsburg Mission gathered at a sacred spot (restricted). Photos 296-302 have not been digitised. These are duplicated elsewhere in other Heinrich albums or lantern slides.

Blinman Mine October 9 1920. The ore from Beltana was at one time also smelted at Blinman: this mine was finally abandoned.

Sliding Rock Mine, Cadnia, near Beltana. At the time of the reproduction of this photo in the "Observer", July 8, 1922, the mine was over fifty years old. Although the mine was no longer in operation there was a considerable amount of valuable machinery at the site. It produced a large amount of copper in its time.

Wrecked carriages when train 455 collided with the rear of troop train 453 between Beltana and Copley at 12.18 a.m. on 11 May 1944. Four soldiers were killed.

School children visit to Port Augusta

Visit by 63 school children from Leigh's Creek, Beltana, and Wilson state schools to Port Augusta on 6 December 1907. "They had been at the schools' exhibition at Quorn on the previous day and Mr Nadebaum, of the Leighs Creek School, having promised his pupils a sight of the sea, the Acting Director (Mr Maughan) arranged to have the idea enlarged, and scholars of the other schools joined in the outing....The Mayor (Mr T. Hewitson) and Mr J. Holdsworth (Chairman of the Board of Advice) met the children at the station. The mayor welcomed them, and intimated that a visit to the shipping, beach and a trip on the gulf had been arranged." (Port Augusta Dispatch 13 December 1907, page 2.).

Cattle are grazing among the scrub and bushes and a man is lying on the ground in the foreground. The countryside in this area contains copper mines which were established in the 1870s.

Alexander Ross member of Ernest Giles Exploratory Expedition from Beltana to Perth and back. (NB Some confusion as Alec Ross is recorded in some reports and photograph B 7548 does not resemble the A Ross shown in some Ernest Giles Expedition journals).

Sitting on floor: Tommy Oldham [General description] This group photograph is in an oval format with all subjects in formal dress. Unlike previous desert explorations which used horses with disastrous results, Giles took camels and an experienced Afghan driver, Saleh. Giles arrived in Perth after successfully completing the crossing of central Australia from Beltana Station in South Australia to reach the West Australian coast. Giles made the return journey back across country, about 400 miles north from the first journey. Tietkens and Young returned to Adelaide by sea.
