BELTANA: A railway cutting, part of the incomplete Great Northern Railway. The 'tent hills' in the background are near Copley. The line was completed to Marree and then Oodnadatta and finally to Alice Springs. The location of this photograph is about 35km north of Beltana, about 3km north of present day Leigh Creek. BELTANA: Railway workers standing on a steam engine near their camp on the Great Northern Railway project which was never completed. This project was known as the Port Augusta to Government Gums Railway, and was the first part of the schem that was at that time called variously the Transcontinental Railway or the Great Northern Railway. It reached Hergott Springs (Marree) and Oodnadatta while financed by the South Australian government. See the Adelaide Observer 27 May 1882 for an article on the Great Northern Railway.

The tugboat 'Euro' swinging an overseas passenger liner into port on arrival at Outer Harbor, South Australia. A researcher has suggested that the passenger vessel is the 'Beltana', built in 1912 by Caird & Co, Greenock, Scotland. He has provided the following information: 'Base Port: London Tonnage: 11120 gross Dimensions: length 515', breadth 63', draught 28' Motive Power: Quadruple expansion engines (9000 IHP) Screws: twin Service Speed: 14 knots Passenger decks: 3 Crew: 260 Passengers: 350 to 1100 third class Livery: Black hull, stone superstructure, black funnel and red boot topping refer - "Ships that Passed" by Scott Baty. Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co., reg. Greenock. 1914: Troopship for Indian & Australian troops. 1917: North Atlantic Troopship. 1919: Resumed Australian service. 1930 May: Toyo Hoyei KK to be converted to a whale factory ship, but laid up. 1933: Demolished in Japan.'

Built 1864 (5). W. Pile and Co. Sunderland. Owners: Devitt and Moore, registered London. Usually employed in the South Australian trades and often loaded wool at Port Augusta. Became a Royal Naval hospital hulk, later an accommodation ship and was renamed Carrick from at least 1925. Given by the Royal Navy for use as a club ship by RNR and berthed in Scotland.
