Wool Storage Shed

Wool Storage Shed

Government wool storage shed at Victor Harbor. A large wool store was built alongside (up against) this one in 1868 where the little hut is in the photo. The store in this photo was always called 'the good shed' locally, being the government owned railways store. It was transferred to the Victor Harbour District Council in the 1980s and is now (2011) the 'Whale Centre'.

Print from the original uncoloured lithograph. Encounter Bay, Victor Harbor as it appeared in the book 'South Australia Illustrated' (plate 16), published 1847. Based on an artwork by George French Angas, the lithographer was J.W. Giles. The view shows a horseman accompanied by an Aboriginal man, on foot and carrying a spear, walking along as track through lush scrub. The harbour and bluff are prominent in the background.

The Tabernacle, Encounter Bay, Victor Harbor. [General description] Drawing of the Tabernacle, the first Congregational Church at Encounter Bay. This small building has a sloping verandah along one side and shingles on the roof. A plaque above the door says 1846. A bell hangs above the front door. [On back of photograph] "The Tabernacle" First Congregational Church, Encounter Bay. (For description and historical account see B 3187) On back of second copy is a newspaper clipping from the Register November 26th 1935.

[General description] A family poses in front of their house which was formerly the Fountain Inn, Victor Harbor, the first hotel in the district, licenced from 1847. From 1894 it was a private residence. See B 16526 for another view. Open countryside can be seen in the background. The crescent shaped objects propped against the fence are possibly whale bones.

Old Grosvenor home which is presently the Post Office site, Victor Harbor. The Grosvenor home on Ocean Street was acquired by the Commonwealth Government in 1915. The cottage was demolished and a new Post Office was built on the site for the sum of five hundred and seventy eight pounds, sixteen shillings and eight pence.

The Causeway, Victor Harbor

The Causeway at Victor Harbor was constructed in 1867 from the existing pier adjacent to the railway station. The Victoria Pier was built between 1862 and 1864 and contained the swimming baths on either side (for men on one side and women on the other). A deeper swimming area was built between the causeway and spur in 1899. The baths had a shark proof fence around them. By 1905 the baths were so popular that accommodation was added, with changing rooms and an entrance fee of threepence. The baths were demolished in 1955 following a severe storm.
