St. Matthew's, Kensington

St. Matthew's Church, Kensington was established in 1848 after land was donated by the South Australia Company. Many notable early South Australians buried in the grounds include Percy Grainger, Colonel Peter Warburton and Baroness von Oertzen. The photograph shows the church, minus the porch, surrounded by a tall hedge and an archway over the white gates leading to the front of the church.

James Alexander Holdens' residence, Holden Street, Kensington Park - Girton School for Girls and now Pembroke School. JA Holden, the businessman who founded the South Australian Company which eventually produced the Holden car, built a substantial seven room house in 1875. The photograph depicts a busy scene showing a nursemaid with a small child standing under the verandah of a large house. There is also a small boy riding a rocking horse, a gentleman seated and a lady standing . A horse and carriage is taking two young ladies away from the house and another maid can be seen on the upstairs balcony along with a lady holding a small child. A large greenhouse stands at the back of the property.

[General description] The Royal Hotel, Kent Town is situated on the corner of North Terrace and DeQuetteville Terrace. It is a two storey stone building with a corner entrance, arched windows (ground floor) and a balcony with decorative railings. This photograph was taken when John Williams was the licensee.

[General description] Kent Town Brewery is a 'state of the art' complex of stone buildings, built in 1876 by Edwin Thomas Smith. Note the horse trough at the kerb.

[General description] Built in 1874 this impressive 'High Victorian' two storey bluestone mansion has a wide return veranda and balconies upstairs. The verandah posts and balcony railings have wrought iron embellishments. Charles Hornabrook was a successful businessman who held the licence for the York Hotel (in Rundle Street) for 21 years. Prince Alfred College in the 1870's. Prince Alfred was the second son and fourth child of Queen Victoria. The land for the college was leased from Dr Benjamin Archer Kent, later bought by Charles Robin. The foundation stone was laid by HRH Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh in 1867

An 18 horse Wool team at Kopperamanna. a Lutheran Church mission near the Birdsville Track. When the Bethesda Mission was fully established at Lake Killalpaninna it was further extended to include two out stations - Koppermanna and Etadunna. In the 1897 season more than 28,000 sheep were shorn although 22,000 sheep died shortly after this due to extreme drought

[General Description] Largs Hotel and the sea front. The three storey Hotel is opposite the Largs Bay Jetty. Sand dunes have built up either side of the Hotel. A tall semaphore flag pole is situated near the jetty and a family is standing on the jetty overlooking the beach. The Semaphore Jetty can be seen in the background. [On back of photograph] Largs 1882-86. (Hotel opened 23rd December 1882. Thomas Hixon first landlord).

Foreshore and Pier Hotel at Largs. The Semaphore Beach Jetty can be seen in the background. Both jetties are long, stretching out into the gulf. Sand dunes can be seen in the foreground and the beach is covered with dried seaweed. It is a very low tide. A signal station is standing on the foreshore at the beginning of the jetty. The Pier Hotel has three storeys of arched shaped verandahs covering the balconies and stands on the sand dunes.

[General description] Taken from the hill opposite, the photograph shows the stone hotel building, horse stables and yards set into the base of a gum studded hill. Various people and a horse team and dray are posed in front of the hotel. The road is bounded by post and rails fencing and the telegraph line. Piles of stones have been dropped by the roadside. [On back of photograph] 'Mountain Hut Hotel / Mount Barker Road, north side, on section 1284, about 300 yards from a sharp elbow in the road, between the Eagle on the Hill and Glen Osmond. Probably in the eighteen eighties'.

Premises of the Woollen Mill at Lobethal [See B 362 for a similar photograph]. The woollen mill was built in the old premises of the FW Kleinschmidt brewery. In 1870 equipment from a tiny mill in Hanhndorf was moved into Kleinschmidt's along with new machinery. Buildings were added to the mill although obtaining an adequate water supply was always a problem. In 1887 Scotsman Robert Redpath came in as manager and productivity increased. The mill provided uniforms for railway workers and the armed forces

He selected land on the upper reaches of the River Angas which is now the town of Macclesfield. George Francis returned from England with his wife but died two years later after his return to South Australia

Wesleyan Church, Magill built in fine gothic style. The transepts were added in 1884. An early Wesleyan church was built on this site in 1855 which was opened by Reverend Thomas Williams and Reverend Joseph Dare. This church burnt down in 1962. The later church is located in Chapel Street, Magill.

Panoramic view at Magill showing the Magill Industrial School and Orphanage at the left in the background. The government bought over 100 acres from the Woodforde Estate in the 1850's. Children were admitted until the end of 1869. The building is of Italian Gothic style and from 1869 was used as a receiving home for state children. The photograph shows orchards and gardens growing on the hillside at Magill
