Magill Orphanage, Woodforde

Magill Orphanage at Woodforde. (Sweet Adelaide 63). The Magill Industrial School opened in 1869 as a government Receiving Home for State Children who had been housed at the Grace Darling Hotel at Brighton. In 1922 it was known as the Methodist Children's Home. The style of the building is Italian Gothic and it is constructed of Glen Osmond Stone with freestone dressings.

GENERAL: Aboriginal hunter. An Aboriginal man in a kangaroo fur cloak, holding a woomera, and shield with incised diamond pattern. There is a boomerang in the woven bag over his shoulder. Sweet Adelaide 457.

Grenfell Street, Adelaide

Grenfell Street, Adelaide, viewed from King William Street. A group of people is standing at the South Australian Insurance Building corner. The 'Register' newspaper building is seen in the centre with its tower. In the foreground is a telegraph pole showing the insulators and the web of wires over the street. (Sweet Adelaide 104).

Adelaide Town Hall organ, King William Street. (Sweet Adelaide 853) The organ arrived from London in 1877. The opening concert was held in 1877 with David Lee, Melbourne City Organist at the keyboards.

Gawler Place

Union Bank of Australia, south western corner of Gawler Place, then Freeman Street, and Pirie Street. (Sweet Adelaide 32) The Union Bank was first established in Hobart in 1837. It was an Anglo-Australian bank. The photograph shows the Adelaide branch which was housed in an attractive two storey building with shutters over the windows and an iron railing fence in the front.

Flinders Street Baptist Church

Flinders Street Baptist Church and Manse on the west corner of Flinders and Divett Streets. (Sweet Adelaide 501) The church was completed in 1863 and the Manse in 1877. The church was designed by architect RG Thomas and is typical Gothic revival style with elaborate captials to the columns.

Botanic Gardens fountain in palm house. ([Sweet] 106). Palm House was designed by German architect Gustav Runge using hanging glass walls.

Spires of churches in North Adelaide rise above the treeline. Elder Park and the Rotunda are in the foreground. A horse drawn bus is driving up towards North Terrace. Government House, North Terrace. (Sweet Adelaide 33) Approximate date of the photograph is 1880. In 1872 the Conservatory (Library) was built next to the Ballroom. The Billiard Room, Private Secretary's Office, Porter's Hall and Strong Room were all added. The photograph shows the new western wing of Government House.

The interior of the Adelaide Town Hall with people seated for a banquet. The image shows detail of the table settings and decorations and view of the pipe organ. The South Australian Advertiser, 2 November 1883: page 4 notes that Captain Sweet took a photograph of the interior of the Town Hall during a luncheon for the laying of the foundation stone for the Adelaide Young Men's Christian Association, with Hon. Alexander Hay, President of the Association in the chair. His wife, Agnes Grant Hay nee Gosse, is seated two seats to Alexander's right and Charles Goode is seated four seats to his left.
