South Australian views: album
Portrait of six aboriginal people at a campsite near the river. Men are in western dress and standing to look at the camera. Two women are sitting on blankets on the ground. There is a tent to the right and three dogs lying on the ground at the camp. One man is fishing with a wooden spear on the edge of the river. Location unknown, possibly River Murray.
Quorn Railway Station
Quorn Railway Station. Sweet Adelaide 514. Quorn Railway Station opened on 15 December 1879 as the interim terminus of the Central Australian Railway from Port Augusta. In 1881 Quorn became a junction station with the opening of the Peterborough-Quorn railway line. The photograph, taken from a height, shows multiple railway lines, the station and further buildings in the background.
The SS 'Tararua' on Roper River
[Genera description] The SS 'Tararua' moored on the Roper River, 96 miles from the mouth. The ship is reflected in the water. Three men are seated in a rowing boat in the foreground and another man is standing on the yard-arm of the vessel. Copy in Sweet Collection folder 5 has Sweet signature (Sweet Adelaide 887). This ship, seen in such a peaceful setting here was later wrecked at Waipapa Point, New Zealand on 29-30th April, 1881 with 133 lives lost, New Zealand's worst maritime disaster. Saltia Hotel, Saltia
Saltia Hotel. David Lithgow was the licensee in the early 1880s. Copy in Sweet Collection folder 5 has Sweet signature (Sweet Adelaide 397). Saltia was a town between Port Augusta and Quorn. The hotel as built in 1859 to service the bullock drivers and the proprietor was David Lithgow. A school was established in 1864 with twenty students. Evening classes were available for students who could not attend during the daytime. By 1880 there were forty three students attending the school. Thomas Lees house was demolished to make way for the railwayline and later the town died as there was no need for the bullock teams to stop at Saltia. A famous son of Saltia was John Maslin (1826-1908) who was a sheep property owner.

Rundle Street, Adelaide.
Rundle Street, Adelaide, looking east from the King William street intersection. Shopkeekers on the left are: at no. 2, Simmons and Co., Clothier, and Catanach and Vandome, Jewellers. At no. 4 is J.T. Fickling, Tailor, at no. 10 is H. Woodcock, Butcher, and at no. 12 is E.S. Wigg & Son, stationers. At no. 22 is Donaldsons, Andrews & Sharland, and at no. 30 is J.W. Parkin, draper. Waterhouse Chambers is on the right, with its tenant Joel Moss' 'Temple of Fashion'. On the left is the Bee Hive corner. To see the building that replaced this one in 1890, see B 16276. Brown Hill Creek, Mitcham
Two young men resting by Brown Hill Creek at Mitcham. One is holding an infant on his lap. A similar photograph taken at the same spot probably on the same day, but with a woman near the creek and a small child in the foreground, is in Sweet Collection Folder 6 (see B 72483/50).
Largs Pier Hotel
[General description] Constructed by the Largs Bay Land and Investment Company in 1882, this three-storied, white-arched building was built of stone with rendered masonry. The architects were Ernest H. Bayer and Latham A. Whithall. Its roof features two cupolas topped with widow's walks designed for watching ships. People posing for the photographer in front of the hotel and on its balconies were probably the hotel manager's family and staff. [On back of photograph] 'Largs Hotel / 1883-86'. Pirie Street
Pirie Street, south side. German Club 12 yards west of Chesser Street. The German Club was formed in Adelaide in 1854 by a group of upper middle class German emigrants. This impressive building was erected in 1880s. In 1886 a less exclusive German Club was formed, called the South Australian German Association. The original club folded in 1907.

Venus and cupid statue
Small statuette of Venus leaning over her son Cupid. She is holding an arrow, with which to spank the winged Cupid. The statue is mounted on a lacquered base with painted floral decoration.
Norton Summit road
Norton Summit road. A woman and a child, possibly Elizabeth Sweet and one of her children, wearing distinctive white hats, are seen sitting on the grassy verge.

Broken Hill smelters and factory buildings
General view of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd mine and smelters, with railway viaduct connecting Blocks 11 & 12. Reverse side of photograph has 'Captain Sweet, Landscape Photographer, Adelaide' printed on it inside a scroll [also at PRG 280/1/1/54].
Clayton Church, Beulah Park
Clayton Congregational Church, Kensington in the 1890's. Sweet Adelaide 473. The suburb the church stands in is now known as Beulah Park. During 1855 a large and commanding site on the corner of Portrush Road (then known as Kensington Terrace) and The Parade (then East Parade) was purchased. A stone and brick church was built in 1856. A gallery was added to the chapel in 1862. At the time of this photograph a fine new organ built by JE Dodd and Sons was installed. The church had seating for 560 people.

Residence, Marble Hill
[General Description] The Governor's summer residence at Marble Hill in the Adelaide Hills. This stately home commands fine views over the valley and is situated three kilometres east of Norton Summit. The building was completed in 1879. The house has many roofs and a tower. The lawns slope away from the house. [On back of photograph] Government House. Marble Hill 1872-86 (Sweet). (Sweet Adelaide 27).
Brownhill Creek, Mitcham
[General description] This view shows Brownhill Creek meandering amongst gum trees through which a bridge can be seen. In the foreground a lady and child, possibly Elizabeth Sweet and one of her children, are sitting on the creek bank. King William Street, Adelaide
[General description] The photographer has used the telegraph wires for an interesting effect in this scene of city street and buildings. The traffic is all horse drawn and prominent is the Kensington horse tram number 76 displaying a sign advertising Shierlaw's clothing and tailoring business. The Industrial Buildings is in the centre. Bertram & Cornish and H. Jones Photographers are on the corner of Hindley Street. On the far right the E.S.& A. Bank building can be seen. [On back of photograph] 'King William Street, west side.' (Another hand) 'Donated by Mrs. R.C. Edwardes, Glenunga.' Sweet Adelaide signature with inverted anchor symbol or 7. Rundle Street
Rundle Street, South Side, showing entrance to Adelaide Arcade. Smudged Sweet signature, possibly Sweet Adelaide 72 or 92. The photograph shows Rundle Street looking west from a point opposite nearby near Twin Street. The Coat of Arms on the cupola of the Adelaide Arcade is of interest. When the arcade was built in 1885 the promoters decided to hold a competition to design a Coat of Arms as there was not one at the time. There was much discussion about the Australian Colonies adopting a Coat of Arms. Later in 1908 King Edward VII officially granted the Coat of Arms but it was replaced in 1912 by King George V and the 2nd Commonwealth Coat of Arms. The difference is the positioning of the native animals and the words Advance Australia. In the photograph the electricity poles can be seen along Rundle Street. Electricity was introduced in 1895.
Currie Street, Adelaide
[General description] The Bank of Australasia and other city buildings are seen in this view taken from across the intersection. The two horse wagonette waiting in front of the bank is probably a cab. On the right a horse tram is standing. [On back of photograph] 'Currie Street, looking west from King William Street. Probably between 1880 and 1885.' (Another hand) 'Sweet neg.' (Sweet Adelaide 29).
Botanic Gardens
Botanic Gardens with view of the animal enclosure. [on verso] Animals transferred to Zoological gardens 1883. The attractive hexagonal shaped animal house stands amid wide paths and flower beds. In the distance stands a large gum tree with a wooden seat encircling it. Another couple of benches have been placed under a shady tree to the right of the photograph.
Victoria Square looking south
Eastern side of Victoria Square, looking south (Sweet Adelaide 325), from the top of the Treasury Building. King William Street divides the two sides of the square. Wakefield Street divides the garden into halves which are fenced with iron pailings and contain benches and shrubs. The Law Courts and Supreme Court Buildings can be seen at the southern end of the square and the Torrens Building is on the eastern side. Another copy is in Sweet Collection folder 3.
Beltana Station
