Unloading water at Karcultaby
Unloading water on the West Coast for Flying Gang, from a galvanised tank to tanks of railway rolling stock. The term 'Flying Gang' was used by the South Australian Railways to describe track maintenance gangs based in remote areas, and it was common for these gangs in the water scarece areas of Eyre Peninsula to be supplied with water by train. (Information supplied by Peter Knife.).

[General description] The crew poses with Locomotive no. 53. These W class locomotives were used on the Port Augusta and Government Gums (Farina)Railway. [On back of photograph] 'Locomotive no. 53 / Class W (Maker's continuation no. 1717 / Built in Manchester in 1877 by Beyer Peacock / Used on construction work by Barry, Brooks & Fraser until 1882, when it was sold to the South Australian Railways. Sold to Teasdale Smith in December 1911 / Used on 3'6" gauge / Photo evidently between 1882 and 1911 / Information supplied by Mr. L.S. Kingsborough'.


"F" Class Locomotive
[General description] Two men, probably the engineer and fireman on an F Class Locomotive, a class of 4-6-2T steam locomotives operated by the South Australian Railways. The F Class hauled most of Adelaide's passenger trains from 1902 -1930s. The first 22 were built at the Islington Railway Workshops, 12 were built by James Martin & Co. and 10 by Perry Engineering.

New Mountain Type Steam locomotives
Three new Mountain Type Steam locomotives at the Port Dock Railway Wharf, Port Adelaide. These were built in a group of 10 in England by Armstrong Whitworth, and arrived by ship. The South Australian Railways Islington workshops completed the assembly and fit out.
