Convent of the Sisters of St. Joseph
[General description] This new single storey convent building is built of stone with red brick quoins and has the gabled roof fashionable it the time. [On back of photograph] 'Reproduced in the "Observer", Nov. 26, 1927 / Convent of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Port Augusta / Nov. 1927 / Opened Nov. 13, 1927 by Archbishop Spence' (Another hand) 'Architect Mr. J. Firmin Jenkins of Port Pirie / Contractor Mr. W.R. Thompson of Quorn'.


Railway Station of Port Augusta
Railway Station of Port Augusta became a break of gauge station until the standard gauge line was extended to Port Pirie Junction in 1937. In the photograph a two storey building can be seen with a car parked outside.


Dover Castle Hotel
Dover Castle Hotel, Port Augusta existed from 1856-1863 and the first proprietor was E Roberts. The photograph shows a timber building with shingles on the roof, a verandah and hitching rails for horses. Adjacent buildings are constructed from horizontal wooden planks.


Old Mill, Port Augusta
Old Mill at Port Augusta. Dunn's Mill was established to process the wheat harvest. John Dunn was a successful miller from Mount Barker who expanded his mills into country areas. A jetty was constructed on the foreshore to cope with the transport of the wheat and flour from Dunn's Mill.

A large sailing vessel can be seen at the end of the jetty; other smaller craft are moored nearby. On the extreme left, behind a beached vessel is P.R.Warren's store.

[General description] The image on this postcard shows a Public Schools excursion at the Port Augusta jetty in April 1911. Children are wading in the shallows whilst other people have crammed into a couple of small boats. Town buildings and pier are seen in the background.


Flinders Hotel. Port Augusta
Flinders Family Hotel, Port Augusta 1880-81 when the licensee was JW Gawen. The two storey building has a wrap around upper balcony on which some of the guests are standing. It was previously known as MacKay's Hotel and later as Hotel Flinders.


Ostrich Farm, Port Augusta
[General description] Ostrich farm, north of Port. Augusta. A number of ostriches are confined in a pen where men are engaged in the task of plucking tail feathers from one of the birds. This project was begun in 1883 by Frank Bignell and W. Campbell with government backing. Drought in the early 1900s and the uncertain fortunes of the industry forced the enterprise to close and the birds to be removed to south, possibly to Priors Court Ostrich Farm at Noarlunga.
