Salem Cottages

Salem Cottages

A row of cottages, labelled Salem Cottages. According to a researcher, Salem Cottages are still located on Druids Avenue in Mount Barker. The cottages were originally built by John Dunn for the widows of the men that worked in his flour mills.

Photograph album of the Davenport family of Battunga, near Macclesfield. Photographs include views of the homestead, property and cottages, family members at Christmas celebrations, picnics and other family occasions at Beaumont House, Port Elliot and North Adelaide. The album includes several photographs of Sir Samuel Davenport. Captions have been noted from handwritten sheets included in the album. Photographs 1-128 which relate to South Australia, have been digitised. The remaining photographs in the album are of travels overseas to Chungking, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

The fine new Catholic church of St Barnabas Church, Strathalbyn was opened in 1911. The old St Barnabas Church was established in 1848 as part of the Mount Barker Parish that stretched from Victor Harbor to Meningie, Pinnaroo to Mount Pleasant to Glen Osmond. By 1901 Strathalbyn was a parish in its own right.

Richard Anstice Perkins

Richard Anstice Perkins aged 2, arrived in South Australia with his parents in 1840 on board "Java". He later helped his parents with their farm at Blackiston, near Mount Barker. He frequently saw bullock teams stuck in Hindley Street and often fed his own bullocks under the gum trees growing where the Arcade is now. He married Elizabeth Amelia Orr, they had nine children and lived at Mount Gambier. In 1877 he was made Overseer of the Government Experimental Farm at Mt Muirhead. He was an expert agriculturalist and well respected in the district. After his work at the Experimental Farm he took up land at Albacutya near Rainbow in the Mallee

Collection of several hundred 3" x 4" glass plates negatives taken around Adelaide by Theo Bachmann ca.1915-1950. Originally housed in labelled sleeves with an index, they feature the Bachmann and Plunket families, as well as more general scenes. The original envelope number is shown in square brackets after the description of each image, and can be cross-referenced to the index (see B 71826/656. Images 101-200 feature family picnics, The Botanic Gardens, views around Belair and Waterfall Gully, and scenes around the suburbs.

Papers of Sir John Cockburn

Papers relating to Sir John Cockburn, former Premier of South Australia, comprising monographs "The records of the Cockburn family" by Sir Robert Cockburn c.1913 and "The house of Cockburn of that ilk and cadets therof" by Thomas H. Cockburn-Hood c.1888 and John Cockburn's "Roll of the National Australian Convention which met in Sydney, 2nd March 1891" with a full page newspaper clipping of the event, and similarly for the 2nd Convention in 1897. Also includes a letter from young 'J.A. Cockburn' to his mother, family trees, a copy of 'Gray's Elegy' and a scrapbook of newspaper clippings related to John Cockburn. Other items include commissions, appointments, a birth certificate and extracts of an entry in a register of marriages, a testimonial, a certificate from the South Australian Medical Board, a personal invitation to the opening of the establishment of Parliament in Canberra and documentation pertaining to his knighthood and a photograph taken of him in later life in London.
