Photographs of W.A. Robjohns

The series comprises 15 albums housing 1,973 photographs, most of which were taken by photographer W.A. Robjohns ca.1920-1966. Album covers were numbered and labelled by Robjohns. The sequence is incomplete, however, as only volumes 1-9, 12-14, 15, 20 and 23 have been donated. Robjohns' brief descriptions of content on the covers and spines are incomplete. For further descriptions of place names and subjects contained in each album, SEE details below. The albums contain small black and white prints, mostly undated, with captions by W.R. Robjohns. Also sepia and postcard prints, and a few hand-tinted prints. A small number of images were taken by other photographers, several of whom have been identified by Robjohns. Images depict Adelaide suburbs, city scenes and country towns, with an emphasis on rural landscapes, parks and reserves, rivers, reservoirs, streets, houses, churches, businesses and shop fronts, and public celebrations and processions. Also included are images of the Robjohns family on picnics and holiday outings, and their homes, cars and pets. A number of photos were duplicated or enlarged by Robjohns and appear in more than one album.

Men and boys with an early make motor car

Men and boys with an early make motor car

A 1903 Humberette 5 hp motor car with driver and passenger surrounded by other men and boys. The car is facing east on Magill Road; the occasion is possibly a car time trial for the Automobile Club of South Australia between Magill and Norton Summit (east of Adelaide, South Australia). Three of the men are carrying noteboards as if recording times. The building in the background is W.D. Cosgrove Butchers on the south-west corner of East Road [now East Street] and Magill Road.

Album of views in and around Adelaide, including some portraits of Aboriginal people

Album of views in and around Adelaide, including some portraits of Aboriginal people. Photographs include a set of views, interior and exterior, of the Exhibition Building, North Terrace. These photographs are duplicates of images found elsewhere in the Pictorial Collection and can be viewed online by searching on Archival number B 10212; view of the first Congregational Chapel in South Australia (a duplicate of photograph B 538); several formal studio portraits taken of Aboriginal people in traditional dress and cloaks of animal skin, holding traditional weapons or implements; several other photographs of Aboriginal people, possibly gathered at Point McLeay on Lake Alexandrina at the time of the visit of the Royal Princes Albert and George. These can be viewed online by taking the Browse Album link. The album also contains several views of Glenelg, Burnside and Magill and surrounding hills, Waterfall Gully, and several North Adelaide Church properties including St Peter's Cathedral before its renovation and expansion. The album is a re-assembled and reconstituted photographic copy of an earlier album with original pressed flowers rehoused in plastic and tipped in. The album includes photographic copies of cuttings and illustrations collected from other sources, characteristic of a scrapbook. There is a portrait of a young woman, unnamed (image 57) who may be the creator of the album. Photocopies of three handwritten poems appear in the album. Two of these have the first line 'My darling! my beautiful darling' and the words 'Agnes Neale' Adelaide at the end. The first of these poems marks the gift of a child and the second, the loss of a child. The third poem is titled 'Grace Darling' and appears together with an illustration of Grace Darling rowing a small boat in heavy seas.

"Maid and Magpie Hotel"

"Maid and Magpie Hotel"

"Maid and Magpie Hotel", Stepney; the signpost points the way to Magill, Greenhill and Lobethal, behind it is the public house lamp which was the only one in the vicinity. Notes on the back of the photograph state "Maid and Magpie Hotel (and Tea Gardens) Stepney, c. 1870 as it appeared about 80 years ago. Note structure on right carrying notice "Quoits. Skittles". On the left is a hansom cab. At the triangular corner is situated the public house lamp (the only public lamp in the vicinity) and a signpost pointing the way to Magill, Green Hill, and Lobethal. Contemporary feminine costume is illustrated on the right foreground: the fulsom frock, white stockings, and black lace-up boots. The man standing forward from the central group, wearing a tall grey bell-topper, black bow tie, white boots and "cool" summer clothing, is probably a travelling photographer: A primitive camera stands on its tripod on his left. The Maid and Magpie was first licensed in June 1848, the locality being known at the time as Second Creek, near the new village of Norwood." The proprietor at the time of this photograph taken in approxomately 1870 could have been C Muller. Various Mullers had held this position between 1848 and 1882
