Photographs of W.A. Robjohns

Photographs of W.A. Robjohns

The series comprises 15 albums housing 1,973 photographs, most of which were taken by photographer W.A. Robjohns ca.1920-1966. Album covers were numbered and labelled by Robjohns. The sequence is incomplete, however, as only volumes 1-9, 12-14, 15, 20 and 23 have been donated. Robjohns' brief descriptions of content on the covers and spines are incomplete. For further descriptions of place names and subjects contained in each album, SEE details below. The albums contain small black and white prints, mostly undated, with captions by W.R. Robjohns. Also sepia and postcard prints, and a few hand-tinted prints. A small number of images were taken by other photographers, several of whom have been identified by Robjohns. Images depict Adelaide suburbs, city scenes and country towns, with an emphasis on rural landscapes, parks and reserves, rivers, reservoirs, streets, houses, churches, businesses and shop fronts, and public celebrations and processions. Also included are images of the Robjohns family on picnics and holiday outings, and their homes, cars and pets. A number of photos were duplicated or enlarged by Robjohns and appear in more than one album.

Lock 4 football club

Lock 4 football club

Digital copy of a sepia photograph of a team of footballers from the Riverland posing in a bush setting. The caption on the verso reads 'Lock 4 Football Club'. Original printed in Renmark. A researcher has provided the following information: this photo had to have been taken between 1927 and 1929 when Lock 4 was underway. On 13 March 1927 a meeting of the Lock Four Football Club was held in the town hall with Mr B. Warren presiding. The question of joining one of the river football associations was discussed and it was decided to apply for admission to the Renmark (Upper Murray) association. The colours selected for the club were red and black, subject to approval of the association. It was resolved to prepare a ground immediately. They joined the Loxton-Browns Well Association. From the Adelaide Chronicle, 19 September 1929, 'Staff and employees have been prominent in sports and the lock for four football team have been premiers of the Loxton-Browns' Well Association of the past three years'.

Murray River Steamers

Murray River Steamers

River steamers Decoy and Murrumbidgee, with barges Moorara, Empress and Mallara carrying the largest consignment of dried fruit (500 tons) ever carried on the river system. All vessels were at this time owned by Murray Shipping Ltd. Several events, including the disruption to trade caused by drought and World War I induced several large River Murray shipowners to combine their resources into one company: Murray Shipping Ltd. was formed in 1919 and included the fleet of Permewan, Wright and Co. Ltd. and AH Landseer Ltd of Milang and Knox and Downs of Wilcannia. Irrigation was established on the River Murray in the late 19th century; bust and boom years followed as droughts, heatwaves and severe frosts played havoc in the orchards. The tenacity of the pioneers, the development of more appropriate crops and frost protection techniques saw the Murray Valley eventually become established as a major fruit-growing region. Much of the land was developed after the First and Second World Wars with the Soldier Settlement Schemes opening up new tracts of land to irrigation. Dried fruit was a staple for many years and the river boats carried it downstream: a railway at Morgan connected the river trade with Port Adelaide and overseas shipping and there were railway lines to Loxton, Paringa and Waikerie by 1914.
