This three storey ornate building houses The Norwich Union Fire Office, South Australian Insurance Company Limited, which was established in 1797. It also houses the Mutual Life and Citizens Assurance Company Limited. Bunting is draped around the doorway to the building. The Criterion Hotel stands on the southern side and D Politis offers afternoon tea at Athenaeum, Matters and Company Auctioneers and Estate Managers stands on the northern side.

Town Hall, King William Street, Adelaide. The Town Hall was designed by Edmund Wright and was opened on 20th June, 1866. The clock did not appear until 1935 when it was donated by Sir J.Lavington Bonython.

In front of the hotel horse cabs for hire are standing. On the left the empty clockface of the Town Hall can be seen. [The clock was installed in 1935.] The left side of the hotel is 46 yards south of Pirie Street.

Women turned out to be enthusiastic voters: the percentage of those women enrolled who went to the polls was marginally higher than the percentage of enrolled men who voted. A large crowd mills around the tally board.

Residence of the Town Hall manager Mr Gapp. Mr Gapp and his wife and family can be seen in the gateway to his house. The modest stone cottage stands on Acre 203 on the corner of King William Street and Pirie Street. The Prince Alfred Hotel abuts the cottage and this photograph was taken on June 7th, 1898 looking north east. The little building was at one time (1852) the Adelaide Corporation Chamber. See B 465 and B 81. Beyond the one storey building can be seen the back of the Pirie Street Wesleyan Church.

[General description] The Pirie Street Wesleyan Church and Manse. The foundation stone of the church was laid on the 15th July, 1850, and the building was finished in the early 1850s. Pirie Street Methodist Church, November 29 1893. Church is 72 yards east of King William Street, frontage 25 yards. This church designed by Henry Stockey was started in 1850 and finished in 1852. This church uses the traditional building materials of yellow limestone rubble walling and pink bricks for quoins and trim to the doors and window openings.

Pirie Street, Adelaide, south side, west of Gawler Place, showing the Woman's Christian Temperance Union building. The South Australian branch of the W.C.T.U. was founded in 1889, so this building has been recently completed. Its appearance was unchanged until 1925 when it was demolished. See B 4716 for a view of the new building. The near side of the building is 32 yards west of Gawler Place and its frontage is 22 yards.

Gawler Place, west side near Pirie Street. The building was formerly used as a Congregational Chapel. The stone building faces east and stands back about 16 yards from the street alignment. The southern wall is about 5 yards north of the southern boundary of the acre. The photograph depicts the business premises of A Simpson and Son. A sack is being lowered from a barn next door and a horse and cart is being loaded with boxes. A bearded gentleman in a bowler hat is coming out the the warehouse.

Pike and Company adjoins the cottages on the eastern side. A man and a child can be seen standing beside the picket fence in front of the cottages. [On back of photograph] Acre 215 & 216. Flinders Street, north side, 27 June 1899, west corner of Naylor Street. The building on the corner of Naylor Street houses the business of The Globe Timber Mills Company, proprietors Simon Harvey and William Haslam. Teams of horses are waiting to carry loads of timber away in carts. A researcher has provided the following information: William Haslam was not an owner of Global Timber Mills in 1899 as William died very suddenly on 9 May 1898. William had been a co-owner with Simon Harvey from 1897 until his death about 12 months later. It seems that Simon Harvey continued for some time as sole owner.

Presbyterian Church, Flinders Street, Adelaide. Built in 1865, this church was amalgamated with Chalmers Church in North Terrace in 1929. It was sold to the Y.M.C.A. in 1956 and demolished in 1957. The left wall of the church is 54 yards west of Wyatt Street and the right wall is 37 yards west of Wyatt Street.
