Dunn's Mill, Bridgewater

Dunn's mill, Bridgewater. Robert Cock who explored this area in 1837. The town was originally called Cox Creek but the name changed later to Bridgewater when the adjacent flour mill was built by John Dunn. This photograph shows stacks of grain sacks ready to be ground at the mill. The large water wheel can be seen at the side of the mill

"Glen Para", Mt. Crawford

'Glen Para' residence built by David Erskine Randall (1819-1874) NNE of Mt. Crawford. The original was painted by his wife, Eliza Drake Randall, nee Wickes (1819-1902), probably in the 1860s. The single storey stone house built in 1851, was later purchased by William Rounsevell (1816-1874) who added a square tower to the house and called it Corryton Park. Notes on the back of photograph state: Erected by David Randall probably in the 1850's. Sections 1120, 670 and 1119 in Hundred of Barossa, marked the northern boundary of the property (a miles or two NNE of Mount Crawford) The house was built on land owned by C Flaxman who was a representative for George Angas Fife.

Colonel George Gawler

Colonel George Gawler

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Colonel George Gawler in seven eighths view. His grey hair, sideburns and beard are neatly trimmed. Appointed Governor of South Australia in 1838 he arrived in the Colony on October 12th that year. He had great difficulties to contend with, and his administration, though it was at the time condemned by many, is now seen to be appropriate in hindsight. He spent a large amount of both his own fortune and government funds in necessary improvements to the colony. He was recalled in 1841. Mathew Blagden Hale

[General description] Mathew Blagden Hale in his later years. He was an Anglican Bishop and educator of Aboriginals in Western Australia, Queensland and South Australia. He was born in Gloucester in 1811 and died in Bristol in 1895. He was survived by his second wife Sabina, five sons and three daughters. [On back of photograph] no information.

[General description] Ridgway William Newland, Minister of Religion, Magistrate, farmer and pioneer of Encounter Bay district. Newland was killed on 8 March 1864 when thrown from the Mail Cart at Baldock's Hill while returning home from Adelaide. [On back of photograph] no information.

[General description] Alexander Russell was the incumbent of Saint Paul's Church in Pulteney Street from its opening on 10th January 1860. This was reported in the "Register" on 10th January 1860. He was later Dean of Adelaide from 1869.[On back of photograph] no information.

Dr. H. Wheeler

Dr. H. Wheeler

Portrait photograph of Dr. Henry Wheeler. He was an Honorary Physician at the London Homoeopathic Hospital, prior to being registered with the South Australian Medical Board. On 9 December 1869 he laid the Foundation Stone of the North Adelaide Baptist Church in Tynte Street. He was a deacon of the church, but returned to England with his family prior to the completion of the building. He practised with Dr. Allan Campbell (1836-1898), who was the founder of the Adelaide Children's Hospital.
