Alexander Russell

Alexander Russell Russell, from 1860 incumbent of St Paul's, Pulteney Street and from 1869 Dean of Cathedral Church Adelaide. Died aged 61 after a fall from the Town Hall stairs. Intimate friend of Frederick Denison Maurice. Came to Adelaide in 1854 and served in the parishes of St John's Adelaide, St Paul's Adelaide. Was appointed Canon and Rural Dean, Vicar-General of the Diocese. Connected with charitable and literary institutions of Adelaide. Published two volumes of poetry The Seeker (1881) and Voices of Doubt (1884).

William Bundey

William Bundey

William Bundey - Mayor of Adelaide from 1883-86. He was born at Beaulieu in Hampshire and emigrated to South Australia in 1848. He was a builder and carpenter and followed the gold rush to Victoria. During the time he was connected to the City Cuncil the Town Hall was erected. He had three terms of office as Mayor of Adelaide. He was a prominent member of the Wesleyan Church and a strong supporter of the Temperance Movement. He suffered a fatal hear attack at a wedding in North Adelaide.

The near side of Hall & Savage's (on extreme right) is 6 yards west of Charles Street. All the buildings to the right of the Adelaide Arcade were demolished in 1927. [General description] View along King William Street towards North Adelaide with city buildings on either side of the street, the Town Hall being prominent on the left. King William Street is busy with the new electric trams. [On back of photograph] 'Adelaide / King William Street, looking north / from the General Post Office / About 1909'. According to a researcher, this image was published in the "Construction and Local Government Journal", Friday 26th November 1915, page 13.

[On back of photograph] 'King William St., looking south from Waymouth St., Nov.1, 1867, on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of the Victoria Tower (G.P.O.).' [General description] This office was performed by the Duke of Edinburgh during the first royal visit to Australia. The huge stone of Macclesfield marble (two metres long and 70cm high) can be seen today on the King William St frontage. This rather blurred view shows crowds of people in the street, especially concentrated around the G.P.O. site. Temporary seating, decorated with greenery, has been installed against the Town hall and the buildings opposite. Flags and bunting are everywhere.

King William Street looking south towards Victoria Square during the visit of the Duke of York, 1901. The Royal visit occurred between 9th and 15th July 1901. The Governor at the time was Tennyson and the Mayor of Adelaide was A.W. Ware. Addresses were given at the Town Hall to welcome the Royal couple to Adelaide after their arrival at Port Adelaide, Adelaide Railway Station en route to Government House. To mark their arrival 1,200 homing pigeons were released from Victoria Square to convey the good news to many parts of the State. The photograph shows crowds lining Victoria Square and the various military personnel including Mounted Rifles, Machine Gun Corps., Field Artillery, Naval Brigade, Garrison Artillery, 1st and 2nd Battalion Infantry, Cadets and Defence Rifle Clubs. The parade is turning from Victoria Square into Wakefield Street at the highly decorated statue of Queen Victoria.

Adelaide City Council is far from a Mickey Mouse operation - but it gave that impression last week when the ageless rodent and his friends Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Roger Rabbit and Pluto invaded Adelaide Town Hall to be greeted by Lord Mayor Steve Condous. The sensational six drew a crowd of about 40,000 when they started their visit to Adelaide with a cavalcade through the city last week as part of a Myer Disneyland promotion.
