The Elder Scientific Exploration Expedition 1891-2: photographs
'The Elder Scientific Exploration Expedition 1891-2, photographs taken by the Medical Officer of the Expedition, F. J. Elliot, F. R. G. S., Surgeon. Presented to Surgeon Elliot by Sir Thomas Elder'. Comprises two albums of photographs showing country passed through during the expedition, including creeks, wells, rock holes, springs, camping places, granite outcrops, vegetation, notable trees marked during earlier exploration by Giles, Forrest and Mills. The expedition left from Nilpinna Spring, near Cootanoorina in northern South Australia and explored areas of the Everard Ranges, Birksgate Ranges, Fraser Ranges and Hampton Plains regions in Western Australia ending at the Murchison River. Album 1 contains images 1-76; album 2 contains images 77-107. An index to the numbered plates appears at the front of each album. The Indexes have been photographed as images 1A and 77A. The wording of the captions (seen above) is taken directly from the indexes. Note that the numbered captions for photographs 50-52, 60-75, in volume 1 have been pasted against the wrong photographs. For this reason all photographs in the two albums have been digitised without their corresponding captions. Plates 97-98. Lake Deborah, dry salt lake, in volume 2 are missing.
