A first group of portraits was assembled in 1884-1886, and included 'gentlemen who have been Governors of the South Australian Institute from its establishment in 1856, and of the Public Library since 1884'. These were added to subsequently, with three volumes compiled to 1940. The caption for each photograph has the date of appointment or date of election to the Board of Governors. The contributors to the albums were asked upon submitting their photograph, to indicate the date of the photograph if possible. These dates of photographs have been shown in brackets.

The 'Merle' paddle steamer

GENERAL: The 'Merle', a stern wheel paddle steamer owned by river trader Edward Diener; it pulled the shop barges 'Eva Millicent' and 'Flo D' between 1903 and 1917 when it sank in Lake Alexandrina, about a year later the 'Flo' was reconstructed as the 'Kookaburra'. The craft was originally named after Merle the daughter of Edward and Catherine Diener.

'A river boat crew grapples with reeds and creepers blocking the entrance of an old irrigation canal leading from the Van Co Dong River. Many caches of arms and ammo were found buried along the banks of these canals. These boats had twin browning machine guns on the bow, a grenade launcher on the stern and twin 220 hp motors for speed and acceleration! The VC often ambushed them along narrow rivers - hence the need for speed.' [This was the same trip as photographs 8, 10 & 14. See also D 8182/11(Misc).]

Screw steamer 'Merle', on a sightseeing trip on the River Murray at Blanchetown, after conversion to a motor vessel for tourist trips between Murray Bridge to Blanchetown and downstream to the Lakes. It sank after a fire and lies just south of the railway bridge at Murray Bridge. There was also a Paddle Steamer 'Merle', which sank during a storm in 1917. It was built in Morgan in 1904 by Edward Dienier and named after one of his daughters. It pulled the barges Eva Millicent and Flo D until it sank during a storm in Lake Alexandrina in 1917, the crew and passengers taking refuge on the barge Flo until help arrived [see PRG 1258/1/2675 for another copy of this image].
