Summary

A formal group of young men in army uniform described as the 1st Commonwealth Cadets, photographed after their return from attending the coronation of King George V in England. The photo was taken behind the Adelaide Town Hall, and the five South Australian members were all from St Peter's College. Captain A. Rushall is 4th from left in the front row, with Lieutenant H. Thornton to his right (3rd from left). It is believed 2nd from left in the front row is M. W. Woodley; with J.D. Gilbert 2nd from tight in the front row. Third from left in the middle row is H.L. Davidson, with J.G. Murray to his left (4th from left).

Historical information

The S.A. cadets are pictured and identified in 'The Observer', Saturday 18 November 1911, page 30 as J.G. Murray, H.E. Dean, M.W. Woodley, J.D. Gilbert and H.L. Davidson, along with the group's mentors, Captain A. Rushall and Lt H. Thornton. Articles also appear in the 'Daily Herald' on 8 November 1911, page 3; and 'The Advertiser', Sturday 22 April 1911, page 19. It appears that only Woodley served in the 1st A.I.F., first with the Australian General Hospital 3, Reinforcements 1 (1915-1916), then in France with the 50th Divisional Supply Company of the Imperial Army. A researcher has provided the following additional information: John Driffield Gilbert: enlisted British Army; KIA 1917, Royal Flying Corps, ex Sussex yeomanry. Mathew Warren Woodley: provate, AIF, Australian General Hospital3, Reinforcement 1, then transferred to British Army with commission. Alan Edward Dean: 2nd lieutenant, 9th Light Horse, transferred to 'Imperial' [Indian] Army 1918, son of Colonel E.G. Dean. Hugh Laude Davidson: no military service in WWI found to date. John Tinline Murray: gunnerm 23rd Howitzer Brigade, 8th Reinfircement, state & test cricketer post war.
