River steamer "P.S. Cadell"

"Cadell" river steamer purchased by Captain George Johnston and brought out by "Queen of South". Hull built at Goolwa 1876. Her hull was launched in 1876 and she was used as a barge until 1878 when her engine was fitted. Captain George Johnston's brother Peter was killed after falling into the paddlebox in 1881."Cadell" requently crossed the river mouth and later lay derelict on the beach at Port Pirie.

"Corowa" river steamer built at Moama in 1868. She had a composite hull and weighed 182 tons. She was a replacement for "Lady Darling" and some of the previous ships materials were used in her construction. She was stuck in the upper reaches of the Darling in the early 1880s.

River steamer "Corrong" passing under the raised bridge at Balranald, New South Wales, on the Murrumbidgee River. The steamer was possibly named for Corrong Station on the Lachlan River. She was sister ship to "Burrabogie". Bargehand William England was lost overboard in 1874.

River steamer "Ellen" before enlargement at Bourke. No copying without permission from the Donor. Built at Goolwa in 1876 as a barge she worked out of Port Wakefield but returned to Mildura in 1888. Sank near Euston in 1923 and destroyed by fire in 1930. The photograph shows "Ellen" as she appeared before the rebuild.

"Pioneer", River Steamer

"Pioneer" later named the "William Randell", River steamer. No copying without permission from the Donor. "Pioneer" was 175 tons and built in 1870. There appear to have been two "Pioneers" in 1879. This one was later renamed "William Randell" about 1907.

"Pearl" the two funnel Steamer at Echuca. Not Chaffey Brothers Stern Wheeler of the same name. "Pearl" was a stern wheeler of 77 tons and built in Mildura in 1866.

River steamer "The Sturt", built at Port Sturt. She was built in 1856 and was the sister vessel to "Leichardt". She was stuck in the Darling River from 1885-1886. She hit a snag and sank in 1890.

River steamer "Victoria" built at Mundoo Island in 1884. No copying without permission from the Donor. "Victoria" had an iron frame, weighed 114 tons.

River steamer "Wilcannia" built at Milang in 1876. No copying without permission from the donor. "Wilcannia" was built in 1874 and weighed 144 tons. Her engines were originally from "Telegraph". She was wrecked in 1915 but was still running in 1924. The photograph shows the paddle steamer taking on fire wood on the banks of the river.

Raising a sunken barge from the River Murray, showing the" Ariel" in the background, which was later renamed "Kelvin". No copying without permission from the Donor. One of the two boats used to raise the sunken barge is named "Stella".

River Steamer, Ruby - the second Ruby, built 1876 for Elliot Randell of Euchuca/Moama. There were 4 riverboat of this name to be used on the River Murray. The third "Ruby" was built in 1894.

River Steamer "Avoca" was built in 1877. She sank near Wilcannia in 1878. Left river trade for Spencer Gulf trade c.1890. Returned to River Murray c.1920 to cart stone and occasional "rough" tourist trips. She sank at Mildura in 2014

"Lady Daly" River Steamer

"Lady Daly" River Steamer

[General description] Side view of 'P.S. Lady Daly' raising 'S.W. Settler', at Settlers Bend, near Renmark. Both are sternwheelers. The "Settler' owned by P.W. Jackson and Alexander Murray, was built at Fletcher's Slip at Port Adelaide. At 167 feet long including the wheel, she proved far too long to negotiate the many twists of the upper river. After just one season she was taken off the rivers. The 'Lady Daly' built by the same owners was 112 feet plus wheel and served with success until the 1890s [On back of photograph] 'The date of the picture is stated to be 1862 / Information supplied by H. [General description] River Steamer 'Blanche' [48 tons, built at Goolwa in 1869] with the river in the foreground. She appears to be at moorings whilst people on board and on the riverbank pose for the photograph. Goods to be transported are piled up on the bank, and a horse drawn cart waits.
