[General description] A group of men, probably staff have assembled under a gumtree in front of A.H. Landseer's store and mill at MIlang. The mill operated from approximately 1870 to 1890, replacing the Pavy flour mill which was established in Milang in the 1850s to supply flour for the riverboat trade. A.H. Landseer was a prominent businessman in the lower Murray district becoming one of the colony's principal river merchants with other flour mills in Morgan and Lake Alexandrina and large woolsheds at Goolwa and Port Victor.

[General description] This abandoned mill stands amongst gumtrees, falling into ruin. The central part of the building has started to collapse, probably because of damage done when machinery was removed. [On back of photograph] 'Flour Mill, Millbrook / erected by Whitford, Soward, Davies and Tippett in 1856 / Foundation stone laid by Francis Symonds, J.P. on April 29 1856 (See Observer May 3, 1856, supp. 1d / Mill closed in 1867 and machinery sold to the Port Pirie Milling Co. / For many years entertainments and Salvation Army meetings were held in the lower story / See cuttings book, Vol. 2, p. 135 / Presented by Mrs. S.A. Millicent - street scene. Millicent was proclaimed a township in 1870. It was named after the wife of one of the early pioneers - Millecent Glen (nee Short) daughterof the first Anglican Bishop of Adelaide, Augustus Short. Prior to the arrival of Europeans the Bungandidj and Boandik Aboriginal people lived in the area. In 1863 the land was drained and used for wheat and barley crops. In the photograph the Saddler shop can be seen in the main street.

Martindale Hall at Mintaro, the residence of John Andrew Tennant Mortlock since the early 1890s. Mortlock was the son of a wealthy pastoralist family and he took over running the Mintaro estate on the death of his father in 1913. Martindale Hall was built in 1879 by Edmund Bowman. Between 50 to 60 skilled tradesmen were brought from England to build the Italianate influenced sandstone mansion. The Georgian style Martindale Hall is in the midst of an estate of 10,000 acres. Martindale Station is in the hundreds of Upper Wakefield and Stanley. Martindale Hall is in the hundred of Stanley.

Torrens Arms Hotel, Kingswood

Torrens Arms Hotel at Kingswood (adjacent to Mitcham) existed from 1857. The proprietor at the time of this photograph was HA Hummerstone. The two storey corner hotel has gables and an alternate coloured striped verandah. A group of school children can be seen at the left of the photograph.
