Historical information

Millicent Tuckwell was presented with the Distinguished Service Award in 1972. The citation read 'Mrs Millicent G. Tuckwell first joined the Service Corps Department in 1940 and has been a Company leader of outstanding ability ever since. On many occasions she has taken charge of special projects and exercises and has shown exceptional powers of leadership. She has always been most willing to undertake any Red Cross service, regular or emergency, for which she has been asked or volunteered, as shown by the task she performed in the Tasmanian bushfires in February 1967. Mr Tuckwell volunteered for the task of camp supervisor of the burnt-out families, which task she carried out most satisfactorily for a period of six weeks. She has been a regular volunteer instructor in first aid for many years. For 17 years from 1945 to 1963, Mrs Tuckwell held the position of Library Supervisor, during which time the transition from war time to peace time basis took place and this service became well established in this Division. She has been one of the Society's best speaker for the last 25 years and spends a great deal of time lecturing in first aid in schools and to various other groups who request such courses from the department. Outstanding in her loyal and distinguished service to the Society has been the hundreds of talks on home hazards which she has given to many hundreds of Mothers' Clubs, church groups, youth clubs, etc., and in these, as in all other aspects of the service she gives, her fine personality and powers of leadership have shown very forcibly. In 1959, Mrs Tuckwell [was given] her Long Service medal, followed by a first bar in 1969, and in 1964 she was awarded a service award. Her loyalty, willingness to do anything asked of her and her continual devotion to the voluntary work makes her a valued member of the Society'. Geoffrey Newman-Morris, Chairman.
