Historical information

John Banks Shepherdson, Anglican lay reader, farmer, magistrate, school master. He was born in Yorkshire and became Colonial Director of the South Australian School Society founded in London. He arrived in Adelaide with his family in 1837. He opened his school in the parklands near Trinity Church and had fifty students. Later he resigned due to ill health and moved to Euchunga then Nairne. While in the Mount Barker district he operated a small saw bench which he used to cut posts, fence palings and rails for the locals to build their homes. He became Postmaster and Clerk of the Court, Justice of the Peace and Stipendiary Magistrate for Yorke Peninsula and lived in Kadina and Wallaroo. He was remembered for his ability and uniform kindness.
