Historical information

The 18th Light Horse Regiment was formed in South Australia in 1921 and inherited the territorial title of 'Adelaide Lancers' which was first given to the militia cavalry, the South Australian Volunteer Mounted Rifles, around 1888. The regiment was mechanised and by 1937 was without the use of horses and depended entirely upon motor support. In March 1937 units of the 18th Light Horse (Machine Gun) Regiment, totalling around 300 men and officers, camped at Nangawooka Bend, near Victor Harbour. Lieutenant -Colonel A.S.M. Lovell was in charge of the training, assited by Major Horsnell and Adjutant-Major R.A. McFarlane. Squadron leaders were Major M.L. Mitchell, Major A.S. Blackburn, and Captain M.A. Walloscheck.
