Summary

Pen and ink drawing of a circus scene, with caption of dialogue between the clown and Master of the Ring at bottom. On the verso of the folded sheet of paper is a dedication by Skipper to its recipient E.W. Andrews, with two verses of a poem in another hand. The item had been folded several times and may have been sent to Andrews in a letter.

General notes

Skipper's note: 'Dear Sir The underwritten would not have made a bad addition to the well-worn jokes of friend Burton Yours truly J.M. Skipper'. The two verses written under this read: 1. Oft had I seen her in the park/And long'd to clasp her lily hand/While flashed from forth her orbs so dark/Glances that lovers understand. 2. Again - I met her at a Ball/How swift the witching hours flew by- /I asked her "did she love me?" - all/Her fond response was - "Ax my eye!" E.W. Andrews may have been Edward William Andrews who arrived 1839 on the 'Anna Robertson' and was an editor and merchant in Adelaide. He died in 1877 at Port Elliot [information from Biographical Index of South Australians 1836-1885].
