Note: Photograph B 30049 for the memorial to Stapleton and John Frank gives the former's second given name as Lorenzo, not Lawrence. On his death certificate the name is spelt Laurence and also on his children's birth certificates; on his marriage certificate it is spelt Lawrence.

Historical information

James Stapleton migrated to Australia from Canada in 1859. A married man with four children, he worked as the Stationmaster at Barrow Creek telegraph station, the next repeater station north of Alice Springs, from 1873.
