Summary

Made in a pre-photographic era, this illustration is a detailed description of the vessel known as 'The Zebra'. The artist, Jacob Ahrend Hinrich Böttger (attributed to, according to recently found small inscription on the work), has paid attention to fine details of the vessel including sails, rigging and hull. The work was possibly painted from a model or from drawings of building plans of similar vessels, or of the actual vessel. Painstaking measures have been employed to make finely detailed points including sails, rigging and ropes. The artist's interpretation of the work has a focus on the detail of the vessel itself. While the seascape is naive and illustrative, the overall depiction of the vessel is accurate. Hahn was captain of 'The Zebra' in the early 1800's and later became the founding father of Hahndorf, just outside of Adelaide.
