Historical information

George Henry Farr came out to Australia in 1854 to become headmaster of St Peter's College, Adelaide; he was also Vice-Chancellor of the University of Adelaide for a time. He resigned from St Peter's College in 1878 at the age of 60, after which he was made Archdeacon of Mount Gambier and the West. He visited England in 1882 and took his L.L.D. degree; after his return he was appointed incumbent of St Luke's Church, Adelaide, a post he held for 12 years. He resigned due to ill health and died at North Adelaide in 1904. Sir John Patteson was a cousin of GHF's father, who became GHF's guardian when the latter was seven years old. GHF looked to him 'for advice in all matters legal and personal'.
