Historical information

Alfred Sells senior was ordained a priest in England in 1847. He and his family left for Australia in 1876. He began as the new rector of Lyndoch in 1878 and was appointed to Mitcham from February 1884. He travelled widely in South Australia. He left South Australia to return to live in England in 1899. 'The paintings of this extraordinary pioneer parson are often the only records we have of certain parts of Australia a century ago.' [Source: David Dolan in 'Australasian antique collector', 1980.']
