Historical information

Rosa Catherine Fiveash was born in Adelaide in 1854. Studied at the Adelaide Art School of Design under Louis Tannert and H.P. Gill. Specialised in painting Australian flora, illustrating 'Forest Flora of South Australia' (1882-1890) by John Ednie Brown (1848-1899) and 'South Australian Orchids' (1922) by Dr Richard Sanders Rogers. Also illustrated various ethnological and zoological works for Sir Edward Charles Stirling (1848-1919) and the South Australian Museum. Introduced china painting into Adelaide, attending to the entire process from start to firing. Lived at 'Gable House' in North Adelaide from the age of five until her death in 1938.
