Historical information

John McConnell Black was born in Scotland in 1855. Emigrated to South Australia in 1877 and began farming at Baroota. Married Alice Jane Denford (1858-1936) in 1879. Moved to Adelaide in 1882 and became a reporter for the 'Register' and then 'Advertiser' newspapers. Retired after receiving a legacy from his deceased mother, Ellan Black (1822-1902), and began pursuing his interest in botany. Elected to the Royal Society of South Australia in 1907 and later served as President (1933-1934). Began contributing papers to the Society's 'Transactions' in 1909. Best known for 'Flora of South Australia' (1922-1929) published in four volumes. Died in 1951.
