Summary

Log book, 24 July 1836 - 8 September 1836 of John White's voyage to South Australia on the 'Tam O'Shanter'. The remainder of of the volume contains accounts and notes for work done, in particular for the Colonisation Commissioners, together with food rations (issued? received?) on a daily basis. The volume also has a large number of notes inserted throughout.

Historical information

On 14 May 1836, John White, of St John's Wood, Portland Town, provided an estimate for timbers for Government House, South Australia, to the Colonisation Commissioners for South Australia, which was subsequently accepted. Arriving at Holdfast Bay on the 'Tam O'Shanter' (with his brother George) on 14 December 1836, he was subsequently responsible for the supply of 35 double wooden cottages for the Emigration Depot (at the west end of what was to become Hindley Street) and a cottage on North Terrace for Colonel William Light.
