General notes

Historical information

One of the first three locomotives used to pull trains on South Australian railways from 1856. Built in Manchester they were named Victoria, Albert and Adelaide. This locomotive displays the tender engine conversion conducted in 1869 to increase their capacity for fuel and water prior to their being withdrawn by 1873. A researcher has provided the following information: This loco was NOT built by Wm. Fairbairn (who built the SAR's first three Locos) but was built by the Avonside Engine Co. of Bristol. Its works number was 587 and it was built in 1864, both of which can be read on the builder's plate when the photograph is enlarged. It is SAR E class No.14 and is standing at the east end of the old loco shed in Adelaide yard. Holy Trinity church in North Terrace is in the left background. The photo is recorded elsewhere as having been taken on 18th August 1865.
