Historical information

The Leworthy family held land at Hindmarsh Valley and some of the papers relate to this area. The donor, Miss Betty Leworthy, was connected with the family of Commander Henry Leworthy, David Sutherland and Arthur Fydell Lindsay. Commander Henry Leworthy RN served as a midshipman during the Napoleonic Wars, being for some time a prisoner of war in France. Served in 'Home Stations' until being made a Commander in December 1848, and appointed Collector of Customs in South Australia. Left aboard the 'John Munn' with his wife, seven daughters, and only son, arriving in Adelaide on 16th September 1849. Commander Leworthy died at Barnett's Hotel, Port Adelaide, four days later, on 20th September aged 58. His widow, Mrs Betty Leworthy, was in 1852 living at Yankalilla, and in 1859, apparently had a home at Hindmarsh Valley. In 1865 she was living at Goolwa. She is known finally to have been living in 'Alexandra', Torrens Street, Victor Harbor. Died 25 February 1891. Leworthy and Lindsay Streets, Victor Harbor are named for the family.
