Summary

Seven thousand members of rifle clubs attending a review held in the grounds of Government House, Sydney, New South Wales on 28th August 1915; supervisors dressed in military uniforms are present indicating that the men could be new recruits for military service.

Historical information

Rifle Clubs were being formed under the Defence Act at that time and served to provide pre-enlistment training to men interested in serving in the war. e.g. Mosman-Neutral Bay in Sydney had 707 members during the war and 243 of those enlisted. Those too old to enlist provided support such as fund raising for the war effort by putting on shows, etc. and collecting items for packing into "Comfort Parcels" for those who were on the front line. They met twice weekly for lectures, and other training (including rifle and bayonet practice). This parade was without rifles as they were in short supply. (Information supplied by a researcher).
