Summary

South Australian army officers during World War I outside quarters. This photo was published in 'The Observer', Saturday 28 August 1915, page 28, under the general heading 'Responded to the call - recruiting and military camps'. The caption under the photo reads: 'Headquarters staff at Exhibition Camp: - Back Row Lieut. H. K. Bews (Quartermaster), Lieut. A.A. Scarfe (Orderly Officer), 8th Light Horse, Lieut. C.C. Tucker (Adjutant), Lieut. Knowles (Army Service Corps). Front Row - Lieut. A.R. Creswick (Camp Orderly Officer), Capt. J.R. Borrow (second in command); Lieut.-Col. T. Hancock, Brigade Major (Camp Commandant), Capt. J.B. McGlashan (Army Medical Corps)'. [Duplicate of PRG 280/1/15/155.]

Historical information

The same officers appear in a number of photos. The man seated in the front row on the left also appears in PRG 280/1/9/120 standing on the left; the officer seated in the front row, second from left is also seen in PRG 280/1/9/120 on the horse; and the officer standing second from left also appears in PRG 280/1/9/120, standing second from left. Colonel Hancock (3rd from left, front row) also appears in PRG 280/1/9/80. The photo published in 'The Critic', Wednesday 16 February 1916, page 14, of 'Officers at the Exhibition Camp' names many of the men involved at this time. Note that Creswick is in his pre war 74th Infantry uniform. This group is from different pre war units - possibly c.1914-1915 training role as many militia soldiers did this and many later transferred to the AIF like Creswick. An article in 'The News', Thursday 15 November 1928, page 23, gives some background to Frederick Knowles' war service.
