General notes

This photograph was published in The Observer newspaper, 29 March 1919, page 26.

The Register newspaper of 24 March 1919 reported, "There was an impressive ceremony on Friday when the remains of the late Sister M.F. Stafford, of No.15 Australian General Hospital, Torrens Park, were interred at Mitcham Cemetery. The deceased sister was accorded full military honours. The funeral Cortege left the hospital, and the gun carriage was preceded by the firing party and the 4th Military District Band. ... The late sister enlisted for service abroad about four years ago and was attached to No.1 General Hospital in Egypt for a considerable time. Thence she proceeded to France and England, and returned to Australia about 12 months ago. She joined the staff of the hospital at Torrens Park shortly after her return from abroad. Sister Stafford was a great favourite with both patients and staff. This is the first occasion in the history of South Australia on which a nurse has been accorded military honours at burial."

Nurse Stafford's remains were the first to be re-interred in the newly created Garden of Memory, West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, in 1923.
