Summary

Distant view of an unveiling ceremony for a war memorial located outside the Smithfield Institute building. Due to vandalism, the soldier on the monument was replaced with a cross in 1980. The Institute building was demolished in 1989, and a row of shops now stand where the Institute now was (corner of Queen Street and Anderson Walk, Smithfield). The monument was moved to a park on the opposite side of Anderson Walk. For details of the unveiling of the memorial see the article 'Smithfield Memorial' in the 'Bunyip' newspaper, Friday 21 May 1920, page 3.
