Summary

A group of five Australian army officers photographed at an army camp; they are possibly members of the Medical Corps as indicated by Searcy's comment 'Good sawbones'. According to a researcher, the man standing left rear is Doctor Harry Nott, RMO (who was with the 10th Battalion AIF), with W. R. Cavenagh-Mainwaring to his left (assigned to the 3rd Light Horse). Both units were at the Morphettville Camp in 1914. The man seated in the centre is Frederick Goldsmith, surgeon (also appears in PRG 280/1/26/104). The three seated in the front row are all wearing pre-war peak caps (shiny leather visors) suggesting they are or were in the militia pre-war - so the the other two may have been with Goldsmith in the 3rd Field Ambulance ie Fry and Moodie.

General notes

There is a reference to Captain Nott in an article on the camp which appeared in 'The Express and Telegraph' Wednesday 7 October 1914, page 4. Another photo can be found in the State Records of South Australia collection under GRG 26/5/4/760.

Historical information

According to another researcher, this image is indicative of the early World War 1 era, as one officer is wearing an Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) jacket of the kind adopted in 1914 (back right hand side), However, none has identifiable insignia. In the background are a large number of 'bell' tents, which is known as an old design and was soon to be replaced in late 1914. It is possible the photograph illustrates non-AIF camp staff possibly medical, at Morphetville circa 1914, or at the time of establishment of 10th Battalion. Harry Carew NOTT date of birth 1 August 1888, Occupation Medical practitioner of Lower Mitcham, South Australia. Age at embarkation 26, Next of kin was his father, A E Nott, also of Lower Mitcham, South Australia. Enlistment date 19 August 1914 with rank on enlistment as Captain. The Unit name was 10th Battalion. Nott was returned to Australia, 3rd January 1916. Cavanagh-Mainwaring also appears in PRG 280/1/114/136.
