Two South Australian military officers, Colonel Stanley Weir, right and Captain Frank Rowell, left, at 'The Lodge', Morphettville. [The Morphettville Camp not only included the Race Course at Morphettville, but an adjacent property lent to the Commonwealth Government by the owner, Mr Hawker, for this early training camp; the building was known as 'The Lodge'.] See PRG 280/1/14/184 for another photo of Rowell, probably taken on the same day.

Historical information

Captain Rowell, later Lieutenant Colonel, died in action at Gallipoli, 8 August 1915.

Colonel Weir commanded the 10th Battalion who were amongst the first to land at ANZAC cove on 25 April. He was the first South Australian to be commissioned in the A.I.F.
