General notes

The ship appears to be a British light cruiser of WWI vintage. Two such ships were built in Sydney, on No 1 slipway at Cockatoo Island - HMAS Brisbane, launched 30 September 1915 and HMAS Adelaide, launched 27 July 1918. It is neither of these ships (see SLNSW Home and away 7474 and AWM 305488). There are clues - the photo being in an Australian collection suggests it might be an Australian ship - possibly HMAS Sydney (I) or HMAS Melbourne (I). It is almost certainly HMAS Sydney at her launching at Govan, Scotland on 29 August 1912. The position of the temporary jack staff on the forecastle is particularly convincing (see also AWM H17544) but the other details of the ship, the launchways and the slipway are also consistent with other photos taken on that occasion.
