Historical information

This photograph was taken in 'Richings Lodge', which is in Lovedale, Nilgiris, India, where he owned a dairy. He died there 1922. He married Mary Jane Newell in Bombay. There is an entry in the 'Cyclopedia of South Australia': John Burne Tothill, vigneron and agriculturist. 'Koonowla' is the third son of the late Mr R.W.Tothill, of Exeter, England, where the subject under review was born in 1856. He was educated at the public school and Mount Radford College, Exeter, and after his schooldays joined the P&O Company in the mercantile marine service ... and was subsequently appointed dockmaster for the same Company at Bombay, in which he afterwards held the position of marine surveyor for three years. His health failing, in 1892, Mr Tothill came to South Australia ... and, after arrival, purchased ... about 850 acres of land in the Auburn district ... He combined agricultural pursuits with the winemaking industry, and, generally speaking, has experienced a most successful career. In 1904, he sold the estate at a good profit, and took a trip to the old country, mainly for the benefit of his health, but finding the South Australian climate better suited to his constitution, returned to the land of his adoption ... In 1887 he married Mary, second daughter of Captain Newell of Bombay, India. Additional information: John's will (from the Adelaide probate court registry O.P. no.18 of 1922) was granted in the District of the Nilgiris, 29th August 1922 under the Indian Succession Act and states that it is the last will of John Burne Tothill late of 'Richings Lodge', Lovedale, in the District of Nilgiris, who died on the 15th day of April at Crediton in the county of Devon, England where he was temporarily residing, his fixed place of abode being 'Richings Lodge', Lovedale. His estate was granted to his widow Mary Jane Tothill, residing at 'Richings Lodge'. The will was witnessed in 1919 by the Bank of Madras, Ootacamund, 14th August 1919. (This would indicate that John was there 1919). John Burne Tothill, 59, retired, landed in Bombay, "Arabia" 19th April 1916. Mrs Mary Tothill, widow, 52, travelled from Crediton to Bombay 4th July 1924 "Mongolia". Mary Jane Tothill, widow, 54, left Wolsevy East (England) for Bombay "Kaiser-I-Hind" 9th November 192?.
