Historical information

Joel Roberts was born at Linthwaite (Yorkshire), and came to South Australia from Yorkshire in 1843 aboard the ship 'Arab'. The Roberts family were pioneer members of the Wesleyan Church in South Australia. Joel Roberts farmed near Greenock before engaging in business in Adelaide and Western Australia; later he became a manufacturer at Hindmarsh. Worked as a broker and established the Mechanics' Institute which developed into the South Australian Institute and was later divided into the Public Library and Circulating Library.
