Historical information

Peter Driffield Gilbert (1922-1968) was born in Adelaide, youngest son of Dr Henry Gilbert and Eva Winifred Short. On his paternal side, he was the great-grandson of Joseph Gilbert who arrived in Adelaide from Wiltshire, England in 1839 and went on to establish Pewsey Vale in the Barossa Valley. On his maternal side, he was the great-grandson of Augustus Short, the first Anglican bishop of Adelaide. Peter served in the RAAF during WWII, in Libya, Tunisia, Malta, and Sicily. When he returned to Adelaide, he married Naomi May Smith and had various occupations including farming and retail. He died in 1968 of acute myeloid leukemia.
