Historical information

Thomas Worsnop was born on 2 February 1821 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. He studied arts and law at University, worked for W. Bruce wool manufacturer in Leeds, and as a teacher in Yorkshire, before migrating to South Australia with his wife, Mary Ann (nee Kenyon), and three children. Thomas Worsnop had a very varied career in South Australia. Settling in Port Elliot he worked as a storeman for Elder, Stirling & Co. until 1859 when he was appointed a sergeant in the South Australian Volunteers. From 1960 to 1863 he laboured unsuccessfully on the land as a farmer, before becoming lessee of the Globe Inn on Rundle Street, Adelaide, but was declared bankrupt in 1864. He then worked as a teamster on stations in the far north, during severe privation and drought. In 1866 Worsnop was appointed clerk for the Adelaide City Council. By 1868 he was city treasurer and assistant town clerk, and in 1969 he became town clerk, and proved and effective administrator, reducing the council's debts, while also developing and protecting Adelaide Park Lands, and remained in that position until his death, nearly 30 years later. Worsnop was also a founder and secretary of the Municipal Corporations Association of South Australia, a justice of the peace, a Freemason, and a member of the Old Colonists' Association. He published numerous booklets on muicipal affiars of Adelaide, along with the detailed 'History of the City of Adelaide' (1878), and manuscript for 'The Historical Record of South Australia 1512-1854'. He died at his home in North Adelaide on 24 January 1898, aged 76, and was survided by his wife, three daughters, and two sons.
