Historical information

The 'Peregrine' was built for the General Steam Navigation Company in London for short-sea shipping in Europe before being sold to Howard Smith Co Ltd, Australia, an Australian coastal shipping company in the 19th and early 20th centuries, shortly after its launch. The 'Peregrine' traded cargo and passengers along the east Australian coast and was able to carry refrigerated produce and offered high class accommodation for passengers. Around 1892 Howard Smith Co Ltd had the hull of the ship lengthened by 40 feet, improving the speed and overall performance of the vessel.
