Historical information

Phyllis Jean Honan (later Phyllis Payne) was born 14 February 1917. She was the daughter of James Rasdell Honan and Mary Florence (Gray) Honan. In 1935, while still at Norwood High School, Phyllis was choosen to represent the state in the first South Australian women's cricket team (1934-1937). She also excelled at athletics winning the Norwood High School Junior Cup (1931) and Senior Cup (1932 and 1933). She was chosen for the team which played an international men's side in a match at Unley Oval to raise funds for the State Captain, Sue Summers, to travel to England as a member of the first Australian Women's Cricket Team to tour that country, in 1937. Phyllis retired from her job as a telephonist in order to marry Arthur (Bill) Payne on 19 June 1944 in the All Souls' Church, St. Peters. They had a son, Daryl William, in 1946 and a daughter, Helen Margaret, in 1951. Phyllis died on 15 September 1994.
