Papers from the First World War of No.3329 Pte. L.W. Yeo comprising: five letters written by Wally to his mother Ellie, and family in Australia, describing active service in France, being wounded and recovering in hospitals in England, and marrying Nellie May Dormer on 1 February 1917 in England (1916-1917); typed letter to Mrs Ellie Yeo from the AIF informing her that Pte. L.W. Yeo of the 4th Pioneers Battalion was reported wounded, September 1916; a small card which accompanied a pair of knitted socks sent to Australian soldiers, signed by Mrs Ellie Yeo; and newspaper cuttings announcing Pte. L.W. Yeo on wounded lists, September 1916.

Historical information

Mrs. Julia Wurm (nee Crush) (c.1837-1912) came to South Australia from Brentwood, Essex, England in the 'Calcutta' in 1849. Her husband, Louis F. Wurm (1833-December 1910), was a shipping agent, wheat-buyer, store-keeper, and builder at Stansbury. Port Julia on the east coast of the Yorke Peninsula is named after Julia Wurm. They were married on 28 May 1859 and had eight children: Elizabeth Julia (Ellie) (1860-1948), Ludwig (later Louis) (1862-1904), Frederick Henry (1865-1938), Gertrude Mary (1867-), Gustav Adolph (1869-), Walter Charles (1872-), Alfred Ernest (1877-), and Mabel Josephine (1883-1918). Their eldest daughter, Ellie, married Richard Curtis Yeo (1852-1903), bank manager at Yongala, in 1881. They had three children: Minnie Annette (1882-), Frederick Haydon Curtis (1884-1963), and Lindley Wilton (or Lindley Walter) (1894-1966), known as 'Wally', who enlisted with the AIF, No.3329 Pte. L.W. Yeo, and served on the Western Front during the First World War.
