Copy of a portrait of brother and sister Robert Neighbour and Emma Fielding (nee Neighbour), shaking hands outside of a house. Emma is holiding a book in one hand and is wearing a dress with a high collar, puffed sleeves and full skirts. Robert is wearing a striped jacket, broad-brimmed hat and is holding a walking stick. Written on reverse: 'This photo of great value in my family history records. Robert Neighbour (father of Arthur, Laurie, Les, Stan) and sister Mrs Emma Fielding. Brother and sister of the first family born in SA. Older brother Edward born in U.K. another sister. Robert was very tall. Uncle Les said he died as a result of gallbladder op and the wound never healed and eventually after many months gangrene caused his death.'

Historical information

Robert and Emma Neighbour were two of the children of William Neighbour and Susanna (nee Reynolds). Robert was born in 1853 and married Emma Elizabeth Robinson in 1889. Emma Jane Neighbour was born in 1849, and married Alfred Fielding in 1869. They had an older brother, Edward, and a sister, born in the United Kingdom before the family emigrated to Australia. Robert and his wife Emma had six children: Arthur, Laurence, Leslie Reynold, and Stanley. Emma and Arthur had three children: Albert, Mary Olive, and Edwin Walter.
