Historical information

Laurence (sometimes Lawrence) Neighbour was born on 3 August 1891 at Goolwa, to Robert Neighbour and Emma Elizabeth (nee Robinson). He attended school at Goolwa until the age of 14 then worked at Good's General Store, delivering bags of chaff, worked for a relative for 9 months at Kingscote, Kangaroo Island, then rented a vegetable garden at Tooperang with his younger brother Les. After war broke out, he enlisted with the AIF on 25 January 1917, aged 25, serving as a stretcher-bearer on the Western Front with the 11th Field Ambulance. His brother Leslie Reynold Neighbour also enlisted, No.18226, and served as a stretcher-bearer with the 11th Field Ambulance. Both brothers survived the war and returned to Australia in 1919. Laurence married Lotty Alma Lovegood Watson in 1920, and worked on a diary on Hindmarsh Island, then as a market gardener at Carey Gully. He had three sons, and served on a number of community groups in the Adelaide Hills area, including: secretary to the Uraidla Hospital and to the Agricultural Bureau of Carey Gully, and unofficial Post Master of Carey Gully. He died in 1963.
