Summary

Copy of a family portrait at the golden wedding anniversary of John Sherbourne Lashmar and Jane (nee Rushall) in June 1923. John Sherbourne Lashmar, eldest son of Thomas Young and Jane Lashmar of Kangaroo Island, and Jane, edlest daughter of William and Elizabeth Rushall of Berryfield, Lyndoch, were married on 10 June 1873 at St George's Church, Gawler, by the Rev. Canon Coombes. Jane and John are seated in the front row, and are surrounded by their family.

Historical information

John Sherbourne Lashmar was born at Thebarton in December 1841. As a boy he helped with his father's butcher's business in Mitcham, then moved to Bendigo, walking most of the way from Adelaide, to try his luck during the gold rush. After returning to South Australia, he worked in the butcher's trade, then settled in Port Lincoln and Kangaroo Island, working with his father on sheep runs, and later in the ketch trade, and was the owner of the ketches 'New Arrival' and 'Free Selector'. John married Jane Rushall in 1873, and they had five children: William Young (b.1874), John Edward (b.1876), May (b.1877), Thomas (b.1879), and Kate (b.1884). Their daughter May married Charles Victor Willson in 1909. Thomas, or 'Peter' played with the Port Adelaide Football Club for several seasons. John Lashmar was master of the ketch 'Free Selector'.
