Summary

Family portrait of John Sherbourne Lashmar and wife Jane (nee Rushall), and their children, left to right: John (Jock) Edward, May, Kate, Thomas (Tom or 'Peter') Sherborne, and William (Will) Young. May is wearing a dress with elaborate embroidery and a sash over one shoulder, and is holding a small handbag in one hand. Kate is wearing a white lace apron over her dress and is holding a fan in her lap. William, John, and Jock are wearing formal suits with waist coats and ties, and Tom is wearing a buttoned-up coat. Jane is wearing a tightly-fitted dress with emroidery on the bodice, a high neck, row of buttons down the centre, and slightly puffed sleeves.

Historical information

John Sherbourne Lashmar was born at Thebarton in December 1841. As a boy he helped with his father's butcher's business in Mitcham, then moved to Bendigo, walking most of the way from Adelaide, to try his luck during the gold rush. After returning to South Australia, he worked in the butcher's trade, then settled in Port Lincoln and Kangaroo Island, working with his father on sheep runs, and later in the ketch trade, and was the owner of the ketches 'New Arrival' and 'Free Selector'. John married Jane Rushall in 1873. Their daughter May married Charles Victor Willson in 1909. Thomas, or 'Peter' played with the Port Adelaide Football Club for several seasons. John Lashmar was master of the ketch 'Free Selector'.
